RESIDENT CLIMATE
ACTION GRANTS

A grant program to fund NYCHA resident-led projects in community climate action and sustainability

Are you the type of NYCHA resident who doesn’t just see problems, but dreams of solutions? Are you interested in community-building through resident-led programming that brings much-needed change to the space that surrounds you?

NYCHA Sustainability in partnership with the Fund for Public Housing, is looking for residents who are ready to bring their problem-solving skills to the next level by leading the way in addressing climate and sustainability issues that matter most to NYCHA residents.

A NOTE FROM NYCHA

In September 2021, NYCHA released its updated Sustainability Agenda. This document outlines NYCHA's commitment to healthy and comfortable homes that showcase environmental stewardship and sustainable design. In 2021 NYCHA launched the Climate Action Network workshop series to elevate awareness about energy and sustainability projects and initiatives and build a community around sustainability-related activism. The feedback from the workshop series helped showcase the need for Climate Action Grant funding for residents. This grant program will build meaningful partnerships, fund residents' ideas and will help make their developments more sustainable.

NYCHA is launching a Climate Action Grant Program to support resident-led sustainability projects

Potential projects for this grant opportunity could include community-building events or competitions, educational or recreational programming,  gardening tools and materials for an established garden, and resiliency or sustainability-related projects or activities.

NYCHA programming aligned with the grant program will be available to interested residents. The Resident Climate Grant Program is powered by Con Edison.

A virtual application webinar was hosted during the inaugural round of submissions which may be requested for viewing. For any application support or questions, please reach out to sustainabilty@nycha.nyc.gov.

INAUGURAL WINNERS

NYCHA awarded its first four grant winners in January 2023 in an award ceremony!

The first four winners of the Resident Climate Action Grant were recognized during a January 20 ceremony at NYCHA’s central office in Manhattan. The resident groups receiving the funding include the Resident Green Committee at Woodside Houses in Queens; residents and NeighborhoodStat leaders at Brooklyn’s Red Hook West Houses; the Inner City Green Team at Wagner Houses in East Harlem; and community leaders at Mill Brook Houses in the South Bronx.

Rejuvenating local gardens with new crops and green features, promoting energy efficiency in the community with sustainable lighting, and developing a “one-stop-drop” site for recyclables.

Such resident-led efforts at NYCHA are among the sustainability-focused projects that have been selected to receive funding under the Resident Climate Action Grants Program, an initiative of NYCHA and the nonprofit Fund for Public Housing. Funded in part by Con Edison and Kinetic Communities Consulting Executive Director Daphany Rose Sanchez, the program provides up to $5,000 for each grant to support sustainability projects by residents in their communities.
